Lake Hawea is located 15 minutes from Wanaka and 1 hour from Queenstown (which has an international airport).
It is in an area called Central Otago, a dry mountainous area characterised by tussocked hills, large snowy mountains, crystal clear lakes and large slow moving rivers. A land of contrasts.
Much of the surrounding land is sheep farms, with merino sheep dominating in the high country. The small town is located on the southern side of the lake and is built on the old glacial morraine wall. The population of the town is small, with many of the homes being holiday 'baches'.
